Reverend Torrence Robinson
Reverend Torrence Robinson is a native New Yorker, born and raised in New York City. His father was a native of Florence, South Carolina, and his mother was a native of Birmingham, Alabama. Reverend Robinson attended the public schools of New York City and graduated from the High School of Music and Art in Harlem, N.Y. He was then accepted into the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College as a candidate for an electrical engineering degree. After four years, Reverend Robinson graduated from SUNY Maritime College with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering, a Third Assistant Engineer’s license as a Marine Engineer, and an Ensign’s rank (Reserve Status) in the United States Navy.
Upon graduating from college, Reverend Robinson was hired by the General Electric Company as an Electrical Engineer. After more than a decade with the General Electric Company, God called Reverend Robinson to preach the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
While growing up in the Bronx, Reverend Robinson was a member of the Mount Sinai Baptist Church in the Bronx, N.Y., where the late Reverend William O. Gullette was his pastor. There he received training that would allow him to serve God in ministry at many levels. After 20 years of service at the Mount Sinai Baptist Church, Reverend Robinson was called to pastor the Gethsemane Baptist Church in the Bronx, where he has been the pastor for 35 years.
Reverend Robinson’s gifts made room for him as he held numerous positions in the United Missionary Baptist Association (UMBA). Over a 46 year period, Reverend Robinson served in UMBA as the vice president of the Baptist Training Union, vice president and president of the Congress of Christian Education, and presently the Chairman of the Program Committee.
Having a love for Christian Education, Reverend Robinson served as the vice president and then president of the New York Baptist Education Center in Harlem, N.Y. More recently, he has been assigned as the Area 1 Vice President of the Empire Baptist Missionary State Congress of Christian Education.
Reverend Robinson is a graduate of the Manhattan Bible Institute, where he earned a Master of Theology degree. Since becoming a pastor, Reverend Robinson returned to school to obtain a Master of Science degree in Education. He was employed by the New York City Department of Education for 20 years. He has worked as a science teacher for grades 3 to 8, a District Math Staff Developer, a District Math Coordinator, and a school administrator.
Reverend Torrence Robinson is the proud husband of the beautiful first lady of the Gethsemane Baptist Church, Lady Beverly Robinson, who is also the President of the Minister’s Wives and Widows Auxiliary of the United Missionary Baptist Association. He has two daughters, Jennee and Jeneen, and five grandchildren, Christopher, Andre, Jenyah, Janelle, and Chase.
